We went to Rudy’s BBQ for my boys’ birthday dinner (they turned 15 today). Six pounds of meat–– brisket, turkey, and spicy chopped, which is the ends and trimmings from the turkey and beef ground up and mixed with Rudy’s Sause . A quart of new potatoes, cole slaw, and a loaf of bread. I’m ready for a nap.

Being from Texas (you are too right?) Rudy’s is not top BBQ but the spicy chop sure is tasty! There is a place in San Antonio that has “Chees y Chop” which is half sauced  scraps and Mac & Cheese. So Good.

Not originally from TX, but have lived here for the last 30 years.  No, it’s not the top. We had Franklin’s during the pandemic, and that was the best brisket I’ve ever had. But I commented tonight that while Rudy’s may not be the same level of haute cuisine as some, it’s still a great place to sit and stuff your face. And I really like their cole slaw.

Congratulations on keeping the boys alive for 15 consecutive years. Yes I’m joking but sometimes if I don’t wake them up I swear they would miss an entire day, just sleep right through it.

Looks gooood. Congrats to the boys.

I’ve got a pork shoulder roasting right now...and that smell, coupled with you pictures are making me so hungry.

My problem with Rudy’s is as they have expanded (and probably over expanded)  the quality and consistency of the brisket has gone way downhill. The ribs are usually fine.

That Cheesy Chop sounds awesome. Where is that place? We might make a road trip.

Same thing happen to Dickie’s I think. That is some terrible tasting meat and I’m in the bathroom within the hour.

If you want something unique to do since you are making the trip. Check out the Japanese Tea Garden, it will trick you into feeling like you aren’t in Texas. Other than the weather.

That looks like a nice little day trip. Tea Garden and lunch. We’ve been to the zoo before, but not for many years . And I didn’t know about the garden. Thanks!

We grilled steaks for dinner last night, so it’s been sort of an Adkins Diet birthday weekend!

No problem! I hope you enjoy it, it’s not franklin’s, Lockhart or Luling BBQ but is true Texas BBQ. I used to travel all over the state so meals were paid for, I know how to eat good.

I have yet to find demonstrably bad barbecue. I’m sure it will be fine.

I’ve never been disappointed with Rudy’s.

I haven’t either, and I don’t understand the people saying that it’s low quality or that quality has gone down. I’ve always enjoyed it. We took the leftover brisket and made brisket omelets on Sunday morning. They were amazing. I might go buy some brisket just to bring it home and make more omelets.

It’s my brother’s go-to place down there.

He sent us a frozen brisket for Christmas a couple years ago. We took it with us on spring break and prepared it for four families one night. Everyone was raving about it.

I love their Sause , too.

And they also make a good cole slaw.

So important to me, as well, when eating barbecue.

There’s a local place here that makes something they call Atomic Slaw. So spicy, and so good... Is a little weird for the slaw to be spicier than the barbecue, though!

I like the slaw to act as a cool counterpoint to the peppery brisket. I think too many hip restaurants overthink the cole slaw.

I enjoy many different varieties of slaw, but cannot abide the places that serve something completely flavorless. At the very least, just rip off KFC’s.

I’m pretty sure this is what old men d o: discuss the merits of coleslaw.
